Support for Reading Service (for Primary and Secondary School Pupils)
We offer a service to local schools where we will listen to children read from a book of their choice or one that the class teacher has provided. The School will identify the space to be used for this e.g. social space. We offer two volunteers to come to your school for 1-1.5 hours (dates/times to be negotiated) and listen to children read. The children will have been identified by the School as those who would benefit from reading practice. Each volunteer will have received training in phonics and techniques to bring children on in their reading in a kind and helpful manner and to build the child's confidence. Many of our volunteers have been teachers or Early Years specialists themselves.
All volunteers are members of the PVG Scheme for Anchor Point and will have received Safeguarding training. They will also be required to have a PVG membership for the school they volunteer in as per new Disclosure requirements.

We are particularly interested in assisting with those in the P6 – S2 age range who would benefit from literacy support but initial referrals can come from any age range.
The Bereavement Journey Course
The Bereavement Journey is a course provided by the charity AtaLoss for adults who have experienced a bereavement at any time. It helps people to understand the various ways that grief and bereavement can impact them.
It involves a series of films and discussions weekly over 7 weeks. People do their own grief work facilitated by volunteers. The main material is covered in the first 6 weeks. The final session in week 7 is entirely optional and covers faith questions in bereavement from a Christian perspective. The course is therefore suitable for people of any faith or none.
This will be held at our Pollokshaws Road base on a midweek afternoon or evening.
Literacy and Numeracy Support (coming later in 2026)
We are inviting expressions of interest for a service that will offer targeted support in literacy and numeracy to young people who are struggling with school. The young people may engage in internal truancy or have plummeting attendance with other presenting issues such as anxiety or peer issues. We are particularly interested in supporting children and young people in P6 to S2 but are open to referrals for S3/4 pupils (subject to our volunteer capacity).
Young people will attend our base in Shawlands for 1-2 hours where we will have two volunteers available to work with a small group (of two to three pupils). At least one of our volunteer staff on duty will be a qualified teacher and we will work in partnership with the School to improve attainment in literacy and numeracy. Please note there will be a referral process for this service. We are also able to offer family support to the parents/carers of the young people in a flexible and compassionate way as relationships build.
